a book about one person who yielded to the challenge of scripture and experience
I have had the honor and privilege to work for Rich Stearns and to be part of watching the Lord develop this book through Rich Stearns. In fact, I''ve read three drafts of it!! Rich has captured, in this book, a challenge for every Christian...what is your unique and special contribution in serving the poor. I work at World Vision. I have committed my life to serve the poor and I was still deeply challenged and felt convicted several times throughout the book. When you read the book you will experience what we do here at WV...his transparency and his authentic desire to serve the Lord by serving the poor. For those of us who have worked at World Vision for years, we have had the opportunity to see God at work through Rich''s leadership and the impact the poor has had on him. This book reflects the experiences and learnings he has gained over his 10+ years here. His unpredictable move from corporate America to World Vision, that he shares in his book, is nothing short of miraculous. And, as I told him after reading the first draft, Renee is the true hero of the story. You will be touched by her contribution and see God''s plan for their lives. But, this is not a book about Rich. Rather, its a book about one person who yielded to the challenge of scripture and experienced the blessings of caring for the poor.

I have been inspired to take my faith to a deeper level and confront social inju
Rich Stearns’ willingness to expose the details of his life, faith journey and imperfections speaks volumes about his relationship with God, the world and everyone in it. Read his story and learn from him. I have been inspired to take my faith to a deeper level and confront social injustice head on. No sense of inadequacy or guilt. We all have the power within us to make a difference. And with a little hope, trust and the occasional leap of faith, we might just change the world together.

Let this book challenge you to think differently and move towards action, it has
This book is fabulous! Stearns does not tip-toe around the tragedies facing millions around the world today. Instead he looks at the issues head on and asks, “What are we going to do about it?” His account is both honest and compelling. He wrestles with his own comfortable lifestyle in which the poor are kept at a safe distance as he finds himself face to face with people around the world who have lived through unspeakable calamity. Although some stories were devastating to read, Stearns does not leave us hopeless. This book abounds with ways that people have used their talents, resources, creativity and time to make a difference in the world. Let this book challenge you to think differently and move towards action, it has certainly done that for me.

I love this book
I love this book, and I want people to know it''s not what you might think: a holier-than-thou guy trying to tell you how to live your life. Richard Stearns quickly and repeatedly disabuses the reader of the notion of his own righteousness, and then he launches into a life story that is the stuff of fiction: a boy from humble beginnings works his way to success; along the way he makes a big promise to God, and once he reaches the pinnacle of the American Dream, God taps him on the shoulder and calls in his pledge. With self-deprecating honesty, Stearns describes how mightily he resists this (a typical plot turn for others who go on to make a big difference in the world). God appoints Stearns to lead World Vision, an organization in the business of fighting global poverty, and right away our hero finds himself in a Ugandan hut, face-to-face with a boy whose parents died of AIDS. It''s a wrenching first step of a journey that overhauls Stearns'' faith and worldview. After 10 years of witnessing the distressing magnitude of suffering in the world--much of which can and should be eradicated--now Stearns can''t stay quiet. This book is his passionate shout from the rooftops, and it''s directed squarely at Christians. This might make some believers uncomfortable, but Stearns doesn''t offer a lot of wiggle room. He himself once ignored the part of Jesus'' gospel (Stearns calls it his mission statement) about bringing good news to the poor. But the evidence in the Bible--and in the world, and in the heart of the willing believer--is undisputable: God calls us to love our neighbors, wherever they live. Speaking of love, this book is also a love story in that Stearns speaks adoringly of his wife, Renee''--she''s the heroine of every family anecdote!

Stearns offers compelling stories, staggering statistics, and practical ideas of
Every generation has its sins—of commission and omission. The lens of history will be brutally honest in its judgment. How can the American church, with all its resources and influence, fail to respond proportionately to the greatest crises facing the world? In The Hole in our Gospel, Rich Stearns calls on Christians to no longer tolerate the moral scandal of poverty and injustice in our world. This book is a great read for Christians and non-Christians alike. It reminds us that we MUST care for all people whether they be our neighbors next door or thousands of miles away. Stearns offers compelling stories, staggering statistics, and practical ideas of how we can eradicate poverty in our lifetime.

This book is a must read for all Christian who seek to live out the complete mes
One-half of the world’s 6 billion people live on less than $2 a day This is a reality that can no longer be neglected. Millions of children live in nations with too much debt and not enough development, in societies with deadly diseases and inadequate health care. Millions of families cannot live in dignity because they lack the conditions most of us as Americans believe are essential for human life. Rich Stearns has met hundreds of these people. His message throughout The Hole in Our Gospel is that we each have a unique opportunity to use our voice, votes, money, and time to shape a more caring community and a more just world. This book is a must read for all Christian who seek to live out the complete message of the gospel.
