The Bark of the Bog Owl (Book One of the Wilderking Trilogy)
Click here for a larger image

Author: Jonathan Rogers

Twelve-year-old Aidan Errolson comes from a long line of adventurers. His grandparents were among the first settlers of Corenwald’s Eastern Frontier. His father had been one of the kingdom’s greatest warriors. Aidan, on the other hand, lives the quiet, comfortable life of a nobleman’s son. He never has any real adventures, and that, he believes, is the one great injustice of his otherwise happy life.

All that will change the day he first hears the bark of the bog owl and meets Dobro Turtlebane. Dobro is one of the feechiefolk—a tribe of half-civilized swamp dwellers who fight too much, laugh too loud, cry too easily, and smell just terrible.

But another meeting on that remarkable day may change Aidan’s life even more profoundly. Bayard the Truthspeaker arrives with a startling pronouncement: Aidan Errolson will grow to be the Wilderking—the long-prophesied wild man who will come out of Corenwald’s forests and swamps to lead the kingdom back to its former glory.

There’s just one question: Is Bayard the Truthspeaker a prophet or a madman?

This initial installment in The Wilderking Trilogy is sure to capture the hearts of young and old, boys and girls alike. Written in the same fashion as The Lord of the Rings or The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Bark of the Bog Owl, as the author says, will help “direct a God-fearing boy’s sense of adventure and warrior spirit – his God-given wildness.”

Publishers Weekly Review

"Rogers takes biblical fiction to a new level... that both enchants and entertains. Rogers's lovely descriptions and distinctive voice keep the pages turning." --Publishers Weekly

Oct 14 2008 11:13PM  A Fun Story
"The Bark of the Bog Owl" is a fun book with fun characters. A retelling of the Biblical story of David, it manages to capture the heart of the tale while introducing new and hilarious characters. Since many readers already know the story of David, Rogers had to work harder to create a world that was both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. He succeeds admirably. Though the outline remains the same, new events and a new setting set this story on a solid foundation of its own. I highly recommend this story for any junior high or late elementary student--and anyone who likes to read lighthearted tales with truth at the core.

Aug 8 2008 4:15PM  Surprisingly Good
Aiden Thomas is a lowly shepherd boy, dreaming about being a warrior for
the king of Corenwald. Then he meets one of the legendary Feechiefolk, kills
a panther, and is called to be the Wilderking by an old man with two hungry
goats following him wherever he goes. Soon he''s caught up in a battle for his
homeland, pitted against a monster in a fight to the death. In his surprisingly
good allegory of the story of David, Jonathan Rogers writes a fast-paced,
funny, and exciting book with plenty of twist and turns in the plot.

Apr 26 2005 5:01PM  Exciting! Wonderful! thrilling!
I loved this book. It's so funny, and yet serious. The characters are so lovable and Jonathan Rodgers just makes you want to give adorable Dobro Turtlebane a big hug. The plot is awesome (it sounds a bit like the story of David in the bible, eh? :) and it's the kind of book that you don't want anyone in your family to miss out on. My Dad read it to my 8 year old brother and he loved it. It's a book that's not to be missed!

Jan 22 2005 2:46PM  A nicely written book which I would highly recomend
About halfway through the first chapter, I was struck by the similarities to the Biblical account of King David. I finished the book impressed by the quality of writing and storytelling, but disappointed by the lack of outer hints that this is more than just another fantasty story rife with magic and wicked villains. Bark of the Bog Owl is not like that at all!

Jan 18 2005 2:36PM  Amazing!
Awesome book. I read it in less than a day--no major feat for me if I enjoy a book--so I was disappointed the adventure was over so soon. However, the book was neither too short nor too long in terms of readability. I am looking forward to the next book!

Nov 8 2004 12:21PM  Great !!
My 8 year old daughter and I read the book together in the evenings a chapter at a time. We both couldn't wait until the next evening's chapter... a great story with a great message. We're anxiously awaiting the next book.
