MUSICAL OF THE YEAR NOMINEE - 39th Annual GMA Dove Awards

62 Minutes

Three simple numbers and 26 words from the Book of John are one of the most famous passages of Scripture in the Bible. And in a dark world where numbers such as 9/11 can dredge up feelings of despair, 3:16 becomes a set of numbers that offer hope. When beloved pastor and prolific author Max Lucado realized that Palm Sunday 2008 would bear the same three numbers on the calendar as the "Hope Diamond" of Scripture, he began a massive effort to spread its message to millions through a word-by-word study of John 3:16 in his book 3:16 The Numbers of Hope. As word of this simple, yet powerful resource spread, LifeWay and others came alongside to develop companion pieces ranging from curriculum to devotions to this inspiring musical with the same title.

This live worship experience is led by Travis Cottrell and includes narrations from Max Lucado’s book, adapted for presentation by Mike Harland. Each song was carefully selected to continue the theme of hope that comes from understanding the extent of our Savior’s love for us. This beautiful mix of Easter and non-seasonal songs is perfect for worship any time of the year. Your congregation will want to sing along to the What a Friend Medley, which includes classic hymns, and your choir will love singing this powerful message from a Scripture that brings hope to the world.

TITLES: Overture / Hosanna (Praise Is Rising) / Salvation Is Here / Out of Ashes / The Only One and Only / In Him / Born Again / What a Friend (Hymn Medley) includes: Jesus, What a Friend for Sinners; Man of Sorrows,What a Name; and I Stand Amazed in the Presence / Jesus Saves / Come to the Cross / Glorious

May 4 2008 2:55PM  Wonderful Creatvity, not very well arranged
The musical is a wonderful creation. I've love the concept of singing about salvation for an hour! The songs were wonderfully chosen, however, for the average medium to smaller choir, it is very challenging..especially for tenors and basses. We had to revoice many secions for it to work for us. Also, thumbs down on the DVD, we had much trouble with it and did not discover the glitch until it was too late to order another one. We had to insert each song into media shout in order for it to play correctly.
All said though, God used this musical to help our choir to strech themselves both musically and stylistically. Most importantly, our congregation was challanged to examine the status of thier salvation and become more burdened for the lost.

Apr 30 2008 8:12PM  Awesome
I like the way the musical addresses the various phrases and words in John 3:16...what a message...and what a way to present the message.

The only drawback is that some of the parts are very high.

A group of us from various churches will be taking the musical into 2 prisons in mid-June.

Feb 13 2008 8:21PM  I love it!
Our choir is doing this musical for Easter...and it is probably one of my favorite choir cantatas/programs ever. Wow. Each week in choir practice, as I sing, my worries and fears just drift away. My favorite song, What a Friend, leaves me in tears each week. How blessed we are to have Jesus call us FRIEND. Hallelujah! I am so excited to be learning this music, and thankful for the cds our music minister gave us to practice with. Now I can listen and praise all day at home!

Feb 11 2008 3:34PM  I have really been blessed by it!
I think overall the songs are wonderful and carry a great message. My only problem is that I have a more "traditional" choir and they have been a little reluctant to do something out of their "comfort" zone. The mens part is written quite high, but have altos doing tenors part. They are getting the hang of it now!

Feb 4 2008 1:12PM  Overall, the musical is very good; however, the voicing not so great.
I listened to the cd many times before purchase. The problem was I didn't pay close enough attention to the choral book and the voicing. The tenor part, in many places is written very high (and basses will not be too thrilled either). It must have been written with a collegiate choir in mind and not the run-of-the-mill avergage volunteer church choir. I will probably adjust the narration in a couple places as well. Rhythmic precision is a demand. With that said, I really like the musical.

Nov 29 2007 3:43PM  I really like this
The songs seem very congregation (and choir) friendly. Most choral musicals stand up well to one or two listenings and then you've "heard-it-done-it," but this is a "listen-over-and-over-again" worship CD. Looking forward to previewing it and considering it for this Palm Sunday.
